International School Options โ Real 2026 Tuition
Portugal has a strong international school market, particularly in Lisbon and the Algarve. Schools offer US, British, IB, or French curriculum โ with English instruction as standard.
- CAISL (Community of American International School of Lisbon): the American school. US diploma, AP courses. Tuition: โฌ14,000โ22,000/year. Strong community for American families.
- St. Julian's School (Cascais): British curriculum, IB. One of Portugal's most prestigious. Tuition: โฌ14,000โ20,000/year. Waitlist common for entry years.
- The Oporto British School (Porto): British curriculum. Tuition: โฌ8,000โ14,000/year. Good value relative to Lisbon.
- Nobel International School Algarve: British/IB. Tuition: โฌ8,000โ13,000/year. Popular with Algarve expat families.
- Private bilingual Portuguese schools: Portuguese national curriculum + significant English instruction. โฌ3,000โ7,000/year. Excellent for younger children who can immerse.
- Public schools (SNS system): free. Portuguese curriculum. Works well for children under 8 who can immerse linguistically. Quality varies significantly by school and location.
Additional school costs: registration โฌ1,000โ3,000 (non-refundable), uniforms โฌ200โ400, school transport โฌ800โ2,000/year, extracurriculars โฌ300โ1,200/year. First-year total at a top Lisbon international school: โฌ17,000โ28,000 per child.
Healthcare for Families
Portugal's SNS (public health system) covers legal residents including foreign nationals. Register at your local Centro de Saรบde with your NIF and proof of residency. SNS is free or very low-cost for routine care; the limitation is wait times for specialists (weeks to months for non-urgent referrals).
- Children's healthcare: pediatric consultations at SNS โฌ5โ10. Private pediatrician: โฌ40โ90. Portugal has excellent pediatric medicine, especially in Lisbon (Hospital CUF, Hospital da Luz).
- Family private insurance: Mรฉdis family plans cover two adults and up to three children for โฌ500โ900/month depending on age and coverage level. Far below US family insurance premiums.
- International family plans: Cigna Global family plans covering Portugal and the US: โฌ4,000โ9,000/year for a family of four. Essential if you return to the US for medical care.
- Dental: private dentists charge โฌ20โ50 for cleaning, โฌ40โ80 for fillings, โฌ150โ350 for root canals. Not covered by SNS for adults. Budget โฌ600โ1,500/year for a family of four.

US Child Tax Credit for Families in Portugal
American families in Portugal can still claim the US Child Tax Credit โ one of the most commonly missed benefits for expat families. The rules for 2026:
- Credit: $2,000 per qualifying child under 17. Up to $1,700 refundable (Additional Child Tax Credit / ACTC).
- Qualifying child: US citizen or resident alien, valid US SSN, under 17, lived with you more than half the year. Children living with you in Portugal qualify.
- The FEIE trap for families: using the FEIE to exclude all earned income reduces the earned income base used to calculate the ACTC โ sometimes eliminating it entirely. For a family with two children, this costs $3,400/year. Your CPA must model whether partial FEIE or FTC-only produces a better result when ACTC is factored in.
- Children born in Portugal: register with a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) at the US Embassy in Lisbon to establish US citizenship. Apply for a US SSN at the same appointment. The child then qualifies for the CTC.
Best Value Cities for American Families
- Cascais: wealthy suburb 30 minutes from Lisbon. Best international schools (St. Julian's). Safe, walkable, beach access. Higher rent than central Lisbon but lower than equivalent UK or US suburbs.
- Porto / Matosinhos: significantly cheaper than Lisbon. Growing expat community. Oporto British School. Atlantic beaches 15 minutes away. Best overall value for families in 2026.
- Algarve (Lagos, Tavira, Faro): beach lifestyle, lower cost than Lisbon, good international schools. Seasonal: summer crowds and prices. Best for families who prioritize outdoor lifestyle over career networking.
- รbidos / Silver Coast: rural lifestyle 70 minutes from Lisbon. Very affordable. Limited English-language infrastructure. Works well for homeschooling families.
- Avoid for families: central Lisbon Airbnb corridors (Chiado, Bairro Alto) โ tourist pricing, poor family infrastructure, no parking.
