Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa:
Zero local tax. Full US SE tax. Mandatory Caja. Here's what that means.

The Costa Rica Remote Worker visa launched in 2022 and is genuinely excellent for American digital nomads โ€” $3,000/month qualifies, and Costa Rica charges zero tax on your remote income. But the US SE tax trap (no totalization), mandatory CCSS Caja enrollment, and FBAR obligations follow you to Costa Rica. This page explains the full tax picture for 2026.

Costa Rica: Zero tax on remote income
Under Costa Rica's territorial tax system, all income from foreign clients or employers is 100% exempt from Costa Rican income tax. Whether you earn $3,000/month or $20,000/month remotely, Costa Rica takes nothing. This is the primary financial appeal of the Digital Nomad visa.

FEIE reduces/eliminates US income tax on earned income
Once you qualify (Physical Presence Test: 330+ days outside US, or Bona Fide Residence), you can exclude up to $132,900 in earned income from US federal income tax. For most digital nomads earning under $133K, this can eliminate US income tax entirely. Employment income from a US employer is also FEIE-eligible if you're physically working abroad.

SE tax: Full 15.3% if self-employed or freelance
If you are a freelancer or self-employed contractor (not a W-2 employee), SE tax applies fully. There is no US-Costa Rica totalization agreement. FEIE does not help. On $60,000 net freelance income, SE tax = $8,478. On $100,000, it's $14,130. This is your single largest US tax cost in Costa Rica as a self-employed nomad.
โš ๏ธ
W-2 employees: No SE tax โ€” but FICA still applies
If you are a W-2 employee of a US company working remotely from Costa Rica, you do not owe SE tax. But your employer still withholds FICA (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare). Combined with the employer matching portion (also 6.2% + 1.45%), the total is 15.3% โ€” but split between you and your employer. No totalization relief applies to W-2 employees either.

Cannot work for a Costa Rican employer or client on this visa
All income must be foreign-source. Working for a Costa Rican company or client requires a standard work permit โ€” a different category entirely.

Digital nomad tax questions โ€” answered.

No โ€” the Costa Rica Digital Nomad visa is a temporary residence permit, initially valid for 1 year with a 1-year renewable option (up to 2 years total). It does not lead directly to permanent residency. If you want to stay longer term, you would need to apply under a different category (Pensionado, Rentista, or Investor) after the Digital Nomad visa expires.
Costa Rica's tax residency rules are based on spending more than 183 days in the country in a calendar year. If you spend more than 183 days per year in Costa Rica, you may be considered a Costa Rican tax resident โ€” though given the territorial tax system, this mostly matters for Costa Rica-source income. Your US citizen tax obligations to the IRS are not affected by whether you are a Costa Rican tax resident โ€” you always file US taxes on worldwide income.

Zero Costa Rica tax. Full US SE tax. Mandatory Caja. Know the stack before you apply.

The Costa Rica guide covers the Digital Nomad visa requirements, US tax strategy, Caja enrollment, FBAR obligations, and banking โ€” verified for 2026.
